Ben Chilwell was sent off in Chelsea’s loss in the first-leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Real Madrid. It was a rather difficult away day for the Blues, with Real Madrid dominating proceedings and coming out comfortable 2-0 winners.
Chilwell pulled Rodrygo back by the shoulder on the edge of the box, and was sent off as a result. Federico Valverde released the Brazilian through on goal after a wonderful clipped pass. The English left-back rashly chose to bring down Rodrygo in order to prevent a goal after both Chelsea fullbacks were beaten. The Real Madrid man was noticeably pleased with French referee Francois Letexier’s decision. In the light of the red card, he rejoiced by high-fiving Federico Valverde and swinging his arms towards the fans.
The sending-off made Chelsea’s job difficult, which was evident during Real Madrid’s second goal. The home side played a short corner, with Vinicius Jr. squaring the ball to the edge of the box and Marco Asensio arrived to slot a first-time finish into the bottom corner through Wesley Fofana’s legs and past Kepa Arrizabalaga’s outstretched hand.
Ben Chilwell will now be suspended for the second leg in London. This is the first straight red card the Englishman has received in his career. It is also the first red card he has received for Chelsea. Interestingly, his only red came when he was shown a second yellow card against Chelsea while playing for Leicester City.
